Croatian Sailing Laws: What Every Charterer Must Know

Croatia takes its maritime regulations seriously, and harbor authorities in the Kvarner Gulf are diligent in enforcement. This is not a reason for anxiety — it's a reason for preparation. Everything below is standard for any bareboat charter; if you're sailing with a skipper, we take care of everything for you.

Licenses: What You Need

Croatian law requires at least one person aboard to hold a valid boating license and a VHF radio operator's certificate. For bareboat charter, we need copies of both documents before confirming your booking, and originals must be on board throughout your trip — harbor authorities can and do check.

Which license do you need? A Short Range Certificate (SRC) for VHF is required alongside your boating license. If you hold a foreign license, it must be recognized in Croatian waters. In most cases, RYA, ICC, and equivalent national licenses are accepted — but contact us before booking if you're unsure, as we can advise based on your specific documents.

Don't have a license? No problem — that's exactly why we offer skippered charters. Our professional skippers know the Kvarner intimately and will take you to places the map alone won't reveal.

Crew List

An authorized crew list is mandatory on every vessel sailing Croatian waters. We prepare this document for you at check-in after collecting passport details for all guests. Important: if anyone joins or leaves the boat during the trip, the crew list must be updated and the change reported. This is not optional — it's a legal obligation, and non-compliance carries fines.

Fishing

Recreational fishing from a chartered vessel requires a special permit, which we can arrange on your behalf — just let us know at booking. The permit is affordable and covers rod fishing from the vessel. Underwater fishing (freediving/spearfishing) is another matter: it requires membership in the Croatian Diving Federation (valid for one year) and a separate permit. Spearfishing is completely prohibited within National Parks including Kornati and Mljet.

Diving

Recreational diving in Croatian waters requires membership in the Croatian Diving Federation. The membership process requires proof of diving certification and is valid for one calendar year. Within Kornati and Mljet National Parks, additional park-specific diving permits are required on top of the federation membership. We can advise on the exact process — start before you arrive, as it cannot be completed at the marina on departure day.

National Park Entry

Our Kornati Route passes through Kornati National Park. Park entry is charged per vessel per day and is collected by park rangers on the water — they'll come alongside your boat. Fees vary by vessel size but are modest. The important thing is that you cannot anchor within park boundaries without paying; rangers systematically check. We include all relevant park information in your charter briefing.

VHF Radio

A working VHF radio is legally required on all charter vessels — ours are all equipped and tested before every departure. Channel 16 is the international distress and calling channel; it must be monitored throughout your trip. Our 24/7 assistance team also monitors Channel 16 throughout the season and can reach you anywhere in the Kvarner Gulf.

Insurance and Safety Equipment

All vessels in our fleet carry full third-party marine liability insurance and are equipped to Croatian Maritime Office standards: life jackets for every person on board, distress flares, fire extinguishers, bilge pumps, and first aid kits — all inspected and certified before every departure. Children's life jackets are available on request; please provide ages at booking so we can ensure correct sizes. We advise guests to arrange their own personal travel and health insurance independently.

When in Doubt, Ask

Croatian maritime law changes periodically, and specific requirements for your nationality and license type may differ from the general case. We've been operating from Marina Novi Vinodolski since 2015 and have guided hundreds of international charterers through the paperwork. Send us your documents before booking and we'll tell you exactly where you stand — no guessing, no surprises at check-in.
